Also Known As –Myrciaria dubia, Cacari, Camocamo, and Camucamu

Origin: USA - Island of Hawaii subtropics

Overview - Camu camu is used for viral infections including herpes, cold sores, shingles, and the common cold. It is also used for eye conditions including cataracts and glaucoma. Other uses include treatment of asthma, “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, gum disease (gingivitis), headaches, and osteoarthritis.

  • Some people use camu camu to increase energy and maintain healthy gums, eyes, and skin; and as an antioxidant and immune system stimulant.
  • This bushy tree is native to the riversides of the Amazon, and produces a reddish purple cherry-like fruit that is becoming widely known for its high amounts of Vitamin C. This super fruit is traditionally harvested via canoe, and one wild tree can produce up to 25 pounds of fruit a year.

Parts Used - Fruit

Preparations - Teas, smoothies or other drinks, and baked goods; the powder may also be encapsulated.

Medicinal - Camu camu fruit contains many nutrients including vitamin C, beta-carotene, fatty acids, protein, and others. It also contains other chemicals that might have an effect on the body.

  • The high amount of Vitamin C found in the Camu Camu fruit is attracting the attention of naturopaths and nutritionists alike. The combination of Vitamin C and the other nutrients in this super fruit is becoming known as a general health boosting essential. The powdered form can be easily added to smoothies or encapsulated. As the fruit naturally ripens and sweetens the Vitamin C content decreases. Because of this the fruit is harvested early resulting in a highly acidic flavor which can be easily sweetened to taste.

  1. Was Skeptic 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Apr 2017

I was really skeptic at first because this wasn't certified organic and stated that it was cultivated in the USA and listed as organically grown. I only ordered 2 ounces because I wanted to compare it with the product I purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs. With the comparison I was astonished to find that the powder I received from Mountain Maus was pure with no additives and is so fresh and the aroma is much stronger than the product received from Mountain Rose Herbs. After reading the label from the product from Mountain Rose Herbs I found out that they add silicon dioxide as a flow agent. I don't know about you, but the reason I am purchasing herbs is to move away from chemicals and additives to herbs that are suppose to be good for you.

My conclusion - buy your herbs from this shop. They are fresh and the cost is reasonable.
