Overview - Mustard is an annual plant; the many, erect, branching, angular stem grows 2-7 feet tall and bears large, alternate leaves, the lower ones lyrately pinnatifid and somewhat bristly, the upper glabrous, entire, and lanceolate.  Yellow flowers grow in elongating clusters in terminal racemes from June into November.  Each has 4 petals.  The black seeds develop in upright, bulgy, cylindrical, beaked pods which are held on stalks closely pressed to the stem.

Medicinal Uses - Mustard is a commonly used spice and it rates high on the antioxidant content and presence of selenium, which is believed to be an anti-inflammatory agent. Since ancient times, people all over the world have used it for its medicinal properties. The high nutrient content helps the body to improve the metabolic process, lower high blood pressure and to ward off atherosclerosis. Mustard Seed has multiple benefits of antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory, as mentioned. It stimulates blood flow and helps to improve circulation and warm the skin, often easing painful muscles and sore joints. Sprains and muscle aches may be relieved when applied to the affected area. The seed extract is also considered to be effective for nasal congestion and to help clear up the lungs. When taken at regularly, it is believed to decrease the chances of migraines.

Precautions -  Large doses of Mustard Seed (many times the recommended amount) should not be taken, especially by those with cardiovascular problems. Children under the age of six and the elderly should not use this product. The primary chemical constituents of Mustard Seed include glucosinolates (sinigrin), sinapine, enzyme (myrosin), mucliage, protein and sulphur. When taken internally, the seeds are laxative, for this reason, only small doses are advised as they may inflame the stomach. The rubefacient actions causes mild irritation to the skin, stimulating the circulation in the area.
