In modern naturopathy, Ginkgo biloba  is used as a treatment for dementia, memory loss and age-related cognitive decline. Ginkgo can also enhance circulation, particularly among those with medical conditions such as leg pain, Raynaud's syndrome, which causes severe discomfort in response to cold. Ginkgo improves circulation by improving dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of blood platelets. Two types of chemicals (flavonoids and terpenoids) are believed to have potent antioxidants to help scavenge free radicals. Free radicals are believed to contribute to health problems including heart disease and cancer, as well as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The standardized extract is highly concentrated and seems to be more effective in treating health problems, particularly circulatory problems, than the non- standardized leaf alone. These effects have been helpful in the treatment of hearing and vision problems, impotence, edema, varicose veins, leg ulcers, stroke and intermittent claudication. In fact, Ginkgo biloba tincture has been shown to be as effective as prescription medication in improving pain-free walking distance.
