Overview - The bitter, acrid, cooling root of the bupleurum plant has a Chinese name that literally means "kindling of the barbarians." The plant itself is a perennial ornamental that has sickle shaped leaves and clusters of small yellow flowers. Bupleurum Root, as its Latin appellation (Bupleurum chinense) suggests, is obtained from a plant native to China, where it is known as chai hu. It is one of the most important botanicals used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); such practitioners suggest that bupleurum root is effective in regulating one's qi, or "life-force," and like St. John's Wort, used in TCM for depression.
