Product Description

Myrrh Gum Resin

Wild Crafted - Somalia

Also Known As – Commiphora myrrha

Overview - Myrrh bushes grow in the Middle East. They can reach a height of nine feet. The spiny bark is marked by ducts from which a granular yellow secretion flows. As it dries it turns a reddish-brown. This is the resin that gives the tree its name. It is harvested commercially and used in many things from herbal medicine to incense and perfume.

Medicinal Uses – Internally, Myrrh is used in Chinese medicine for menstrual disorders, menopause, uterine tumors, arthritis and in decoctions, liniments and incense used for heart and liver treatments. Some use it for toothache, bruises, sprains and body aches. It is also used in Ayurvedic and western herbalism. Called guggul in Ayurvedic medicine, it is often prescribed for circulation problems, rheumatic disorders and nervous system issues. Externally, in western herbalism, it is most frequently used as an antiseptic for mouthwashes, gargles and toothpaste.

Other Uses – Myrrh is used as incense for many religious ceremonies. It is also used in the perfume industry.

Herbs to Combine/Supplement - The herb is often combined with cinnamon, notoginseng, safflower stamens, Angelica sinensis and Salvia miltiorrhiza to be taken both internally and externally.

Parts Used - The oleo-gum resin is the only portion used medicinally.

Precautions - Myrrh should not be used during pregnancy. It can cause uterine bleeding. Do not use this herb during a miscarriage or other time of uterine bleeding. Do not use if you have acute internal inflammation. Do not use in cases of fever. Applications of the herb onto the skin may cause a burning feeling. Be very careful to always follow the dosage instructions when using.

  • Small doses are usually tolerated well. Larger doses or doses too close together may cause fever, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea or burning feelings in the bowels and throat.

Preparation and Dosage - A gargle for sore throat: ½ teaspoon of powder should be mixed with 1 or 2 cups of water. Dissolve the powder in the water. Gargle and swallow the mixture. Repeat every 3 or 4 hours until you notice an improvement, then decrease the frequency. For tincture, ½ teaspoon of myrrh can be taken 2 or 3 times per day.

Using myrrh resin powder in herbal medicine

Myrrh is anti-fungal, antiseptic, and astringent. Myrrh is an immune stimulant, a circulatory stimulant, and an expectorant. Internally and externally, myrrh works to heal infection, repair wounds, and clear poisons from the body.

The bitter myrrh resin is used for muscular pain, to heal sores, to lower cholesterol, and in the treatment of mouth ulcers. It is also an excellent remedy for fungal infections including ringworm, thrush, and athlete’s foot. Myrrh is a good addition to chest rubs, mouthwashes, toothpastes, and hemorrhoid ointments. Combine with tea tree oil or yellowroot for best results.

For coughs due to colds, use myrrh as a chest-rub. Combine six to ten drops of myrrh essential oil with a quarter cup of grape seed oil. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil for added strength and rub on chest as needed to soothe cough and reduce phlegm. This mixture also relieves muscle and joint pain when used in massage.

When treating a sore throat or laryngitis, add powdered myrrh to a cup of warm salt water. Gargle often to help speed healing and reduce pain. Do you have bad teeth or gum disease? Sprinkle powered myrrh on toothpaste three times a week and brush as usual. The taste might be unpleasant at first but you will get used to it. Myrrh can actually prevent and help heal gingivitis and other stubborn gum diseases.

Myrrh is a resin that can be dissolved in tinctures and oils. Sometimes myrrh is ground into a fine powder and sprinkled on top of herbal teas. Myrrh does not dissolve in water.

Myrrh resin is known to kill harmful bacteria and to stimulate the activity of white blood cells. Myrrh improves the immune system and stimulates regeneration of healthy cells. Myrrh tincture is a well known remedy for inflamed tissue and may even have anti-cancer properties.
