Product Description

Chicory Root Roasted Granules

Also Known As - Cichorium intybus, Blue Sailors, Common Chicory, Wild Chicory, Succory, and Wild Succory.

Wild Crafted - USA

Overview - Chicory is best known as a coffee substitute or additive, which is made from the roasted root of this plant. The plant is related to the Dandelion, yet has a blue flower and is called “Blue Sailors” in some places it grows. It was brought to North America in the 1800's and has become naturalized in much of the eastern, Midwest and western states excluding most of the southern part of the US. The leaves can be eaten in the spring as a bitter green much like dandelion, and it has been cultivated as a fresh green fodder for livestock. The leaves are rich in vitamin c.

Parts Used - Root and leaves, dried. The root is usually granulated and roasted for a near precise coffee like flavor.

Preparations - Teas, and heated beverages.

  • Decoction: use 1 tsp. rootstock or herb per 1/2 cup of cold water; bring to a boil and strain. Take 1 to 1 1/2 cups per day, a mouthful at a time.
  • Juice: take 1 tbsp. in milk or water, 3 times per day.

Medicinal - The bitter principles and starches are of interest here for its employment in herbal pharmacy. The cultivated varieties contain very large amounts of carbohydrates, inulin, fructose, and fiber and these can be extracted to form a solid substance for tableting, as well as a "prebiotic", providing a food source for friendly bacteria to use during implantation. The root is used and has properties similar to those of dandelion. The leaves and roots are tonic, help regulate the release of fluids and water-soluble waste, have mild laxative properties and support and regulate kidney and liver function.

Chicory is often helpful for jaundice and for spleen problems. The juice of the leaves and a tea made from the flowering plant promote the production of bile, the release of gallstones, and the elimination of excessive internal mucus. They are also useful for gastritis, lack of appetite, and digestive difficulties. AA decoction of the rootstock is said to be helpful to the glandular organs or the digestive system. For painful inflammations, try applying the boiled leaves and flowers wrapped in a cloth. Also a spring tonic.

One ounce root in 1 pint of water used as a diuretic, laxative, folk use for jaundice, skin eruptions, slightly sedative, and mildly laxative. Homeopathically used for liver and gall bladder ailments. Leaf extracts weaker than root extracts. In experiments, animals given chicory root extracts exhibit a slower and weaker heart rate (pulse). It has been suggested that the plant should be researched for use in heart irregularities. Root extracts in alcohol solutions have proven anti-inflammatory effects in experiments.
