Alchemilla refers to alchemists, who believed that the dewdrops gathered from the leaves of lady's mantle had magical properties that would help them in their quest for the legendary philosopher's stone. This plant's common name of lady's mantle refers to the shape of the leaves, which are shaped rather like a lady's cloak. In late spring, early summer lady's mantle blooms with tiny clusters of chartreuse flowers. It prefers a shady spot in the garden, and is fairly easy to grow. It is not frequently bothered by pests.
