Also Known As – Stachys officinalis, Betony, Lousewort, Bishopwort, Common Hedge-Nettle, and Spiked Betony.

Overview - The people of ancient Greece felt this plant was more important than clothing. They thought it could cure at least 47 disease states and even had magical powers to keep away evil spirits. They believed that it could cure a wounded animal upon consuming it.  Anglo-Saxon people wore it to protect themselves against evil spirits. In Medieval England, Wood Betony grew abundantly was used to cure headaches and as a nervine. It was also used here to treat bad dreams of evil spirits.

Medicinal Uses - Wood betony was at one time commonly used as a medicinal plant in the treatment of a wide range of disorders, especially as a nervine and tonic for treating maladies of the head and as an external application to wounds. It also stimulates the digestive system and the liver, having an overall tonic effect upon the body. It is anthelmintic, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, mildly cathartic, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, mildly emetic, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine, sedative, sternutatory, tonic and vulnerary. It is taken in the treatment of 'frayed nerves', pre-menstrual complaints, poor memory and tension. A pinch of the powdered herb will provoke violent sneezing and it has been used as part of a herbal snuff mixture in the treatment of headaches. A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh plant. It is used in the treatment of asthma and excessive perspiration.

Other Uses – A fine yellow dye is obtained from the leaves.

Herbs to Combine/Supplement – It can be taken in combination with herbs such as comfrey, Symphytum officinale, and lime flowers, Tilia species, to treat sinus headaches and congestion. Wood betony can be taken on its own, or with yarrow, Achillea millefolium, to staunch nosebleeds.

Parts Used – The whole herb, collected from wild plants in July, when at their best, and dried.

Precautions - This herb is to be avoided during pregnancy, because the herb may act as a uterine stimulant.

Preparation and Dosage - The leaves and flowering tops make a good tea substitute.

  • The most common modern use is the alleviation of headaches.   This is done through regularly taking about 1-2g of the dried herb in boiling water about 1 to 3 times per day.
  • Wood Betony is also smoked with Eyebright and Coltsfoot to cure headaches. 
  • The last way to use it as a cure for headaches is to sniff a pinch of the powdered herb so to induce sneezing.
