Soapwort Powder

Also known as Saponaria officinalis - Wild Crafted USA

Has a sweetly scent and sudsy. Mixed with water or herb infusions, powdered soapwort root will produce gentle suds, making it useful in preparing bath products.

Soapwort, as it is commonly called, has leafy, unbranched stems which are often tinged red. The plant grows in patches, growing in height to around 70 cm or a little over 2 feet. The broad, lanceolate, sessile leaves are opposite and between 4 and 12 cm long.

Soapwort's sweetly scented flowers are radially symmetrical and colored pink, or on occasion white. Each of their five flat petals have two small scales in the throat of the corolla. The flowers are arranged in dense, terminal clusters on the main stem and its branches. The long tubular calyx has five pointed red teeth.

Medicinal Uses - Suggested uses include for bronchitis, cough, and inflammation of mucous membranes in lower and upper respiratory tract. Soapwort topical suggested uses include for poison ivy, acne, psoriasis, eczema, and boils. 

The only applicable part of the soapwort plant is the root. There is insufficient reliable information available on the efficacy of soapwort. More studies are needed. 

Soapwort is available under the following different brand and other names: bouncing bet, crow soap, dog cloves, farewell summer, foam dock, fuller's herb, gill run by the St. Saponary, hedge pink, lady by the gate, latherwort, old maid's pink, Saponaria officinalis, soap root, sweet Betty, and wild sweet William.
