Product Description

Sassafras Leaf (c/s, Wildharvest)

Also Known As – Sassafras albidum

Origin - USA

Overview – Sassafras is a sturdy tree found in the bayous of Louisiana. When the tree is young, its leaves are shaped like “mittens,” sometimes with two “thumbs.” As the tree matures, sometimes reaching a height of 100 feet (30 meters) and a trunk diameter of up to 6 feet (200 cm), the leaves grow more rounded, free of indentation. Cajun cuisine uses sassafras leaf to make file (FEE-lay), the seasoning and thickening agent for gumbo. The early Cajuns learned to use file’ from the Choctaw Indians of the Gulf coast, who evidently used it to thicken soups.

Medicinal Uses - Sassafras has been used as a sudorific agent, and for treatment of eye inflammation. Extracts of the roots and bark have been found to mimic insect juvenile hormone in Oncopeltus fasciatus . The oil has been applied externally for relief of insect bites and stings and for lice. Other external uses include treatment of rheumatism, gout, sprains, swelling and cutaneous eruptions.  A recent report compares safrole (the main constituent from sassafras oil), to indomethacin for anti-inflammatory activity and pain treatment in mice.

Parts Used –  Root Bark and leaf

Precautions - The essential oil in sassafras bark contains traces of safrole, a toxic chemical, and its use as an oil is greatly cautioned.

Preparation and Dosage - Almost always found as a beverage or tea. The essential oil is more difficult to find and use because its trade is heavily regulated.
