Artichoke Leaf Herbal Tincture

Also Known As - Cynara scolymus

Organically Grown Harvest - Our herbs is grown organically, fertilized with organic manure from our own chickens, rabbits and little kinder goats, and watered from our private well linked to the glaciers of Mt. Rainier and filtered into the Nisqually River. Our herbs are hand picked, dried meticulously analyzed, test for freshness, aroma and taste before we package and deliver to you.

Overview - Artichoke leaf tincture is made from the long, deeply serrated basal leaves of the Artichoke plant. This contains the highest concentration of the biologically active compounds, flavonoids and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives (such as cynarin), and a polyphenol group including chlorogenic acid, luteolin, scolymoside, and cynaroside. Chlorogenic acid has recently become known as a powerful antioxidant with exciting potential in many applications. There are ongoing investigations, all over the world, into its effects on HIV, cancer and diabetes. Results have shown that there are many powerful antioxidants at work that may help to prevent and manage prostate cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia.

As a traditional medicine, Artichoke leaf has been used primarily for enhancing liver function but it is also known to improve digestion, as well as lower high LDL cholesterol levels. According to Science Daily, Dr. Rafe Bundy and his team of researchers at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, have discovered that Artichoke leaf extracts can help to lower cholesterol levels in those with slightly elevated cholesterol, and were otherwise healthy. The extract, rich in flavonoids, may even help to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Medicinal Uses - Lowering Cholesterol: According to Science Daily, Dr. Rafe Bundy and his team of researchers at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, have discovered that artichoke leaf extract can help to lower cholesterol levels in patients with slightly elevated cholesterol that were otherwise healthy. Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic digestive disorder, which can cause stomach pain, constipation, bloating, gas, loss of appetite, emotional distress and depression. In August 2004 The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a study claiming that artichoke leaf extract can improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Indigestion: According to The University of Michigan Health System, artichoke leaf extract can reduce the symptoms of mild indigestion after eating. It works by stimulating the production of bile, which, in turn decreases the transit time of food in the digestive system, thus reducing bloating and gas.

Cleansing the Liver: The liver is one of the most complex of the body’s organs and is crucial in maintaining a healthy immune system. When toxins build up in the liver it is unable to function adequately. According to Natural Detox, signs that the liver needs cleansing include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, premenstrual syndrome, skin irritation, dry mouth and sluggish digestion. The bile production, stimulated by the artichoke leaf extract, benefits the liver by helping it to eliminate toxins.

Parts Used - Dried leaf, rather than the flowering buds eaten as a vegetable.
