Overview - Rehmannia is very popular in Chinese medicine, where it is considered to be a longevity tonic, and one of the 50 fundamental herbs.  The species name glutinosa comes from glutinous, referring to the sticky nature of the root.  The Rehmannia root offered by Mountain Maus has been prepared in the traditional way with an infusion of yellow wine and black beans.

Medicinal Uses - Rehmannia is used for diabetes, “tired blood” (anemia), fever, weakened bones (osteoporosis), and allergies; and as a general tonic.

How it works: The chemicals in rehmannia affect the immune system and reduces pain and swelling. Some chemicals in rehmannia also lower blood sugar levels.

Typical Preparations - The root may be prepared as a decoction.  In order to prevent feelings of heaviness or indigestion, prepare with Cardamom or Ginger.

Suggested Dosage: 1 gram

Precautions - Rehmannia might decrease blood sugar. There is concern that taking rehmannia with other medications for diabetes might cause blood sugar to decrease too much. Monitor your blood sugar closely. The dose of your diabetes medication might need to be changed. Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTabs, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
